IntroductionX-Men Treat Yo Self is a fic exchange on AO3 where you're assigned to yourself, to make whatever it is that
you feel like making. The idea behind it is that deadlines can be motivating, posting anonymously is fun, and most of us have story/art/vidding/podfic/etc ideas that may not get finished without a little bit of a push.
Because AO3 code doesn't actually allow for people to be assigned to themselves, signups for this exchange will occur on
this post on this community. However, fanworks will all be posted to the
AO3 collection during the anonymous posting period.
Signups open: February 22
Signups close: March 9
Anon posting period: April 18-April 26
Creator reveals: April 26
Check-in posts will be made on this community every weekend during the six-week creating period.
If you have any questions, feel free to
ask yo mod or email the mods at treatyomod@gmail.com.
FAQ:What's the point of this?
To encourage each other and make things we're excited about, basically! TREAT YO' SELF.
Is [type of fanwork] allowed?
Yes!
I'm not an X-Men movies fan, but I'd like to write/art/etc something from the comics. Is that okay?
Yes, as long as your work is related to at least one X-Men canon, it's eligible.
Is RPF allowed?
Yes!
I don't have any pre-existing ideas/projects. Is it okay if I come up with a brand-new idea/project just for this exchange?
Yes, absolutely!
Can I give gifts to my friends as well?
The primary point of this challenge is to Treat YO Self, but if that involves treating others then go for it, treat them and TREAT YO SELF.
Can I make more than one thing?
Yes! You can make and post as many fanworks as you'd like!
Do I have to post on the check-in posts?
No, the check-in posts are just for people who find that kind of thing helpful. If all you want to do is sign up, work on your thing, and post it during the anon period, that is 100% fine.
Are collaborations okay?
Yes, as long as at least one of the people involved signed up during the sign-up period.
What if I sign up and don't end up making anything?
Don't worry about it! It happens to all of us, and since you're "assigned" to yourself, it's not like we'll have to find a pinch hitter for you or anything like that!
Can I finish one of my WIPs for this?
You are more than welcome to work on/finish an existing WIP over the course of this challenge. That said, if your WIP is already posted on AO3, you may not add it to the anonymous collection, as your work is already public on AO3. If, however, you have never posted your WIP anywhere or have only been posting it on another platform (ie, on tumblr, lj, etc), then you may post it to the collection, provided that it is complete.
So you guys aren't taking this anon thing super seriously?
Well, not really! We think anon posting is fun, but it's not like you don't already know you're writing for yourself!
Can I write a new story for one of my series for this?
Yes, though if you link it to an existing series before author reveals, that is not really super anonymous.
I got permission to [remix/make art for/record/translate] someone else's fanwork! Do I need to contact you guys with the proof?
No, just keep it handy in case of future issues. (Meaning, if we get a legitimate complaint and you can't prove you had permission, we will remove your work from the collection.)
Um, in regards to the above, I made something that is sort of like something I read/saw this one time, but it's not actually based on that thing - but I'm still vaguely worried about getting in trouble?
Don't be. This is fandom. People make similar fanworks all the time, pick up ideas from each other without consciously realizing it, etc. If you don't explicitly say your fanwork is meant to be a remix or whatever of someone else's fanwork, we'll probably take your word that it's not, outside of really obvious word-for-word stuff.
Rules
Whatever you make for this exchange must be X-Men centric. Crossovers are fine, but must be primarily about at least one X-Men character. RPF must be primarily about at least one actor involved in at least one of the X-Men movies.
You must sign up during the sign-up period to be able to post to the collection during the anon period.
Whatever you post to the collection must be complete.
Whatever you post to the collection must be new to AO3.
You may post as many fanworks during the anon period as you want, provided they are complete.
If you post a work that is based off someone else's fic/art/etc, make sure you have permission first, either through a blanket permission statement or by asking the creator of the other work yourself.
Since you're making something for yourself, if you drop out, you won't "get" anything. There is no penalty for dropping out, nor do you need to inform us whether you will or will not be posting anything.
Be kind to each other, both on the dreamwidth community and in the comments to posted fanworks. Jerks will not be welcome back if we run this challenge again.
TREAT YO' SELF.
